THE ATENEO Men’s Track and Field Team garnered their first points in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 85 Athletics Tournament after an exhilarating performance in the decathlon event. The second day of action was held on December 1 at the PhilSports Complex in Pasig City.
Coming off his first day performance in the decathlon, Ateneo’s Lucas Lopez got off to a strong start by finishing third in Discus Throw with a result of 25.89m. He would then place second in the Shot Put at 10.22m, only behind Far Eastern University’s John Cresencia who had 10.38m. After his first skirmish, Lopez also finished eighth in the 400m, clocking in a time of 56.10 seconds.
Lopez would conclude his decathlon campaign in other events where he achieved three seventh-place finishes (100m, 110m Hurdles, 1500m), two sixth-place finishes (long jump and pole vault), and two ninth-place finishes (high jump and javelin throw). The Blue Eagles garnered a total of 4772 points in the event, good for sixth place overall.

In the Men’s 200m event, Blue Eagles Antonio Severino, Isaiah Yu, Gideon Restor, and Jovick Armada competed in Heats 1 to 4, respectively. Restor led the charge for Ateneo with a time of 23.91 seconds, followed by Yu at 23.92, Severino at 24.61, and Armada at 24.78.
Ateneo’s Jiro Dy, Ramon Labrador, Raymund Vicente, and Lopez were featured in the Men’s Long Jump event. Dy showed the way for the Blue Eagles with a result of 6.15m, followed by Labrador at 5.97m, and Vicente at 5.43m, while Lopez registered a no mark (NM).
Mari Sison and Antonio Severino would then team up with Women’s Team members Louise Cabrera and Jasha Tan in the 4x400m Mixed Relay. The Blue and White finished in sixth place with a time of 4:15.97. After yesterday’s events, the Men’s Track and Field Team garnered their first points of the tournament, with a total of four.
“When I hit my second jump, I gained confidence and I started building from there. I hit my personal best, so I’m grateful even though I fell short of qualifying. There’s a lot of things to look forward to,” said Jiro Dy on his Long Jump performance.
“Of course, I’m thankful, it was a very interesting experience going through my first decathlon, it’s really humbling. To generate points on top of that, it’s very fulfilling,” said Decathlete Lucas Lopez.
The Blue Eagles will continue on their medal hunt in Day 3 of the Athletics tournament which is currently taking place at the PhilSports Complex today, December 2.
