THE ATENEO Lady Eagles returned to the win column after outclassing the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors in overtime, 81-70, during the fifth game of the second round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 82 Women’s Basketball Tournament on Sunday, October 20, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

The Lady Eagles improved to 4-8 for the season, but are out of the running for a Final Four berth after the loss of the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws to the De La Salle University Lady Archers. Meanwhile, UE sank to a 1-11 win-loss card to remain at the bottom of the standings.

Hazelle Yam had an all-around performance for the Lady Eagles, finishing with 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Pam Payac provided a huge lift off the bench with a season-best 15 points.

For the Lady Warriors, Tin Cortizano led the charge with 17 points and 12 boards. Princess Pedregosa also had a huge double-double with 12 points and 18 rebounds, nine of which came from the offensive glass.

UE stormed out of the gates to start the ballgame, taking a 15-7 lead late in the opening quarter, but the Lady Eagles closed the quarter with a 6-0 run behind a triple each from Payac and Alyssa Villamor. Ateneo then began to hit their stride, going on a 9-0 run halfway through the second period to take a 29-19 edge.

The Blue and White continued their stellar play after halftime, this time going on an 18-5 surge to take a 15-point lead near the end of the third quarter. The Lady Warriors however, threw a dazing counterpunch, going on an extended 24-4 spurt to pull back in front 59-64. The game was a barn burner from there, with UE taking a four-point lead with less than a minute remaining, but Ateneo scored four straight points to force overtime courtesy of a triple from Guytingco and a free throw from Yam. In overtime, it was all Blue and White, as they outscored the Lady Warriors 14-3, including two threes from Villamor and Payac.

The bench came up huge for the Lady Eagles, outscoring the second unit of UE 43-14. The Lady Warriors meanwhile, had a +19 edge in offensive rebounds that resulted into 17 more shot attempts than the Blue and White. Despite taking less shots, Ateneo was more efficient, as they shot 47.6% from the field and made 11 from downtown on a 37.9% clip.

Among the players that came off the bench, Head Coach Katrina Quimpo singled out Jhaz Joson and Pam Payac. “I would like to note the efforts of Jhaz Joson and Pam Payac. Pam [Payac] was +19 and Jhaz [Joson] was +16 in the game. It’s good to know that we still have fighters heading into next season,” she said.

The Lady Eagles’ penultimate game of the season will be against the undefeated National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, October 26, 8:00 AM, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
