COMING OFF a loss against the National University Bulldogs, Ateneo failed to overcome the opposition, as rivals De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers secured the win, 1.5-2.5, to close out the weekend. This match capped off the tenth round of matches of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 82 Men’s Chess Tournament which was held on Sunday, October 13 at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila City.

Ateneo remains seventh in the UAAP Season 82 Men’s Chess standings, situating themselves right behind the Adamson University Soaring Falcons with a one-point differential. The Blue Eagles are also currently tied with the University of the East with 16.0 points apiece.

The Ateneo team tried a different approach in today’s contest, as Vince Edralin, Tristan Jared Cervero, and Team Captain Gavin Ong took responsibility of boards one, three, and four, respectively. Playing his second match of the tournament, Hans Reyes was tasked to man second board in lieu of veteran Alexander Santos.

Ateneo struggled out of the gate, as Ong and Edralin failed to put up any points on the board, succumbing to their Green Archer counterparts. In a tough matchup on board two, Reyes was able to salvage a draw, giving the Blue Eagles their first points of the day. Second-year player Cervero was also able to triumph over his opponent, bringing home the sole full point for Ateneo on the tenth matchday. The Blue Eagles will continue their season as they face the UST Growling Tigers powerhouse on Saturday, October 19, 1:00 PM, at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila City.
