Ateneo commemorates Martial Law in week-long event
On September 19 to 28, the School of Social Sciences (SOSS) Sanggunian held a series of activities to commemorate 46 years since Martial Law was declared by late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. The proceedings featured lectures and forums tackling economics, historical revisionism, and narratives of abuse. One of SOSS Sanggunian’s partner organizations, the Union of Students for the Advancement of Democracy (USAD), installed the nameplates of Martial Law victims along the steps of Matteo Ricci Hall. Moreover, Ateneans also gathered for “a night of lamentation through song and poetic gesture,” through the efforts of the Ateneo Resident Students Association. On September 21, exactly 46 years after the actual declaration, the community gathered along Katipunan Avenue for am mobilization. The Sanggunian also released a statement condemning the atrocities not only of the Martial Law era, but also of the Duterte administration, saying that they “do not tolerate” the government that “promises peace and progress, while continuing to monopolize wealth and power.” Thea Unson
