THE ATENEO Blue Eagles (7-0) won their fifth game in five days in a dominant 64-point beating of the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals, 108-44, to extend their undefeated run in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup on June 4.

Shooting an eye-popping 18/37 or 49% clip from rainbow country and dishing out 30 assists, the Katipunan-based side used a balanced attack to dismantle the EAC defense. Matt Nieto led the charge for the Blue and White, putting up 14 points on ⅘ shooting from beyond the arc. Jolo Mendoza was a spark off the bench, scoring 13 markers on ¾ shooting from deep including a rare 4-point play in ten minutes of action. Mike Nieto and Adrian Wong rounded up the double-digit scorers with 10 points apiece.

Meanwhile, Vincent Robin’s 12 points was the only double digit performance that featured for EAC. Arjell Natividad and Rustan Bugarin chipped in 7 markers each in the losing effort.

The Blue Eagles started out hot, opening the game wide in the first quarter with their hot shooting and suffocating defense to end the first period with a 24-point lead, 35-11. The triples continued to pile on in the second quarter as a pair of threes by Matt Nieto and BJ Andrade led to a 13-2 run. Another Matt Nieto triple gave the Blue Eagles a commanding 58-20 lead heading into the halftime break.

The Blue and White opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run highlighted by a pair of Gian Mamuyac triples. A couple of well-timed assists from Mamuyac, Mike Nieto, Pat Maagdenberg, and Jawuan White led to numerous easy baskets for Ateneo. A pull-up three from Mendoza concluded the third period with Ateneo boasting an insurmountable 56-point cushion, 86-30.

Mendoza continued his efficient play at the start of the payoff period with a rare four-point play. EAC scored 10 quick baskets in the middle of the fourth, but the Blue Eagles had all the answers as White, Wong, and Mike Nieto hit a barrage of triples to end the game on an 18-4 run, sealing the final score, 108-44.

The Blue Eagles return to action in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup against the Mapua Cardinals whom they will face at 4:30PM on Friday, June 8 at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
