Season 79 was another trying season of close calls and painful defeats for the Ateneo Softball Team, as they once again finished at seventh place with a 1-11 record. But after an offseason of fine-tuning, coupled with a new voice in the dugout, optimism seems to be the mantra for the Lady Eagles as they enter Season 80.
Team Captain
Bea Parma and Kat Villa-Real
A pair of senior outfielders stand at the helm as team captains this season. Kat Villa-Real holds authority with serious demeanor in daily training, while partner Bea Parma leads through toughness and grit, with both veterans carrying the flag in the hopes of success in their final season.
Nicki Borromeo
Fourth year infielder and pitcher Nicki Borromeo opens the first notes of her swan song as one of Ateneo’s most consistent power-hitters and versatile players on the diamond. Often positioned at the top of the batting order, Borromeo will be relied on to spark the offense and hold firm on the field.
Kevyn Lacson
After shaking off the jitters, Kevyn Lacson sealed her identity as an ace pitcher midway through her rookie season. Last July, the stalwart gained vital experience on the Philippine team in the PONY International 18-U World Series, granting her the guts to carry Ateneo from the mound this year.
Mia Laurel
Brent International School product Mia Laurel kicks off her college career bearing the lofty expectations that her family name has set for her on the diamond. The younger sister of several of the league’s brightest baseball stars, the young infielder aims to carve her own legacy as a Lady Eagle in her rookie year.
Kat Santos
A standout from St. Pedro Poveda College, Kat Santos provides the Lady Eagles with a utility player to develop at any position. The rookie’s main goal this year is to adjust quickly and make the most out of any role given to her, turning her into a flexible player to fill up gaps on the field and within the batting order.
Coachs Corner
Joy Lasquite
Making her debut as the Lady Eagles’ coach, newcomer Joy Lasquite takes the reins in a new season of rebuilding. Formerly the coach of PAREF Woodrose School’s softball program, Lasquite uses familiarity to her advantage, having overseen the development of nine of her current players during their high school roots.
“My goal for Ateneo, especially [since] this is my first time [is that] I really want them to step up dahil lagi silang nasa ilalim (because the team is always at the bottom of the standings).”
