THE ATENEO Blue and Lady Eagles competed in Day 6 of the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Table Tennis tournament on Wednesday, October 4 at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman College of Human Kinetics Gym in Quezon City.
The Blue Eagles fell to the National University (NU) Bulldogs and the Adamson University (AdU) Soaring Falcons, both on 0-3 score lines. Ateneo’s Lady Paddlers also put losses on the board in similar fashion against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and De La Salle University (DLSU), conceding both team-ties at 0-3.
Blue Eagles
The Katipunan-based squad was swept aside in their first team-tie against NU. Blue Eagle Edric Carlos was kept at an arm’s reach as NU’s Keerbie Sta. Ana took a straight-set win, 8-11, 6-11, 7-11. Similarly, David Dayao suffered the same fate at the hands of NU’s John Misal, 7-11, 3-11, 5-11.
On the other hand, Andre Rondolo and Jasper Sy won their first set, 9-11, against Mark Huab and Carl Carrasco. The Blue Eagle pairing would lose steam, however, losing the next three sets, 1-11, 7-11, 1-11, to end the tie in NU’s favor, 0-3.
In the match against AdU, Carlos was again beaten in the men’s singles as Falcon paddler Isaac Eneria triumphed, 6-11, 9-11, 9-11. Blue Eagle Dayao was defeated as well by Francis Bendebel in three sets, 4-11, 6-11, 9-11.
The duo of Rondolo and Sy were again called upon in the men’s doubles, but they came up short with a three-set loss, 6-11, 3-11, 5-11, against AdU’s pair of James Balanquit and Devin Coraza. This spelled defeated for the Blue Eagles in the team-tie, 0-3.
Lady Eagles
Like the Blue Eagles, the Lady Eagles also struggled in their opening tie against UST. The contest began with Lady Eagle Joana Chen being dispatched by Keith Millana in straight sets, 6-11, 2-11, 4-11. Hellari Calvo was able to muster a 12-10 first set win. Her opponent, Katrina Tempiatura bounced back, however, to take the next three sets, 4-11, 5-11, 2-11.
In the doubles matchup, Lady Eagles Trina Cruz and Sharmane Ong were taken down by Rachel Parba and Kathleen Tempiatura in straight sets, 7-11, 5-11, 5-11, to conclude the tie in UST’s favor, 0-3.
The Lady Eagles’ match against DLSU was in the afternoon session. Calvo lost to Season 79 Most Valuable Player Emy Rose Dael in the first singles match. Despite taking the first set, 11-6, Calvo dropped three sets in a row, 7-11, 5-11, 6-11, to surrender to Dael. The next singles match found Nikki Reyes falling to Lady Archer Chantal Alberto in spite of Reyes taking the second set, 4-11, 11-8, 9-11, 6-11.
Cruz would again be in the doubles match, but this time with Chen. The change came to no avail, however, as they lost to DLSU’s Mardeline Carreon and Kim Lumenda in three straight sets, 6-11, 7-11, 10-12.
Ateneo Table Tennis program head Ting Ledesma remained optimistic despite the day’s results.
“Although we (Ateneo) lost, lumalaban pa sila (they are still fighting). You can see the fight there,” said Ledesma.
The Blue and Lady Eagles will enter Day 7 of the UAAP Table Tennis tournament at 8:00 AM against UST and FEU, respectively, and 1:00 PM against FEU and AdU, respectively, on Saturday, October 7 at the UP Diliman College of Human Kinetics Gym in Quezon City.
