Team
A familiar set of names will be featured in the Women’s Basketball team, as only one player from last season’s roster had left. The team will be banking heavily on improvements from veterans to rebound from their sputtering end to Season 79. Continuity will be the key factor in the Lady Eagles’ title aspirations.
Team Captain
Binky Uy De Ong
In her third playing year, Binky Uy De Ong has taken the mantle of team captain, formerly held by Tina Deacon. The combo guard has a patient offensive game; she uses her extensive basketball IQ to maneuver through defenses. Her steadying presence both on and off the court makes her a key figure for the Lady Eagles.
“Even when I wasn’t team captain, I have always been a vocal player, so I try to lead them through my voice. Off the court, I lead by just being an ate to everybody.”
Tina Deacon
Entering her final season, Tina Deacon brings a ton of experience to the team. She is expected to provide size and power to Ateneo’s thin frontline. The center is especially potent in grabbing offensive rebounds. Deacon is not only one of the most reliable players in Ateneo, but in the whole league as well.
Cara Buendia
The team sorely missed Cara Buendia and her production in Season 79. Despite being sidelined last season due to an injury, the physical forward was deemed to be in fine form during the preseason. Buendia’s inside presence and versatility are the glue that holds the team together.
Hazelle Yam
When Hazelle Yam is on the fast break, she is nearly unstoppable. The fourth year wing is one of the quickest players in the league, with a full arsenal of offensive moves at her disposal. The team will be counting on her playmaking and scoring abilities to help guide them back to winning ways.
Jollina Go
When her shots are falling, Jollina Go can be one of the most unstoppable players on the hardwood. Go’s deep range makes her unguardable when she is in rhythm. Her decision-making and consistency leave much to be desired at times, but she is more than capable of scoring in bunches when her team needs it the most.
Coach’s Corner
John Flores
Coach John Flores made his return to the team last season, inheriting a completely new squad. He now faces a new challenge of improving Season 79’s 4-10 record with the same set of players. While he previously had a very strict coaching style, Flores is now focusing on teaching the girls and being more approachable.
“Our focus this year is cohesion. We would like to be more united. We want one heartbeat in the team. That is the focus this year: we want to be one.”
