Despite a bridesmaid finish last Season 79, the Ateneo Men’s Badminton team had a remarkable journey from battling for a playoff spot to overcoming a twice-to-beat advantage in the semis. This season, the Blue Eagles are looking to finally claim the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) crown.
Team Captain
Carlo Remo
Seasoned veteran Carlo Remo now finds himself as team captain. Armed with both national and UAAP badminton experience, the La Salle Greenhills product intends to lead his team to the glory that he experienced as a rookie in Season 76.
“As the team captain, I hope that we bring the championship back to Ateneo for both teams. I aim to not only show leadership inside the court, but outside the court as well.”
Sean Chan
Former team captain Sean Chan returns as one of the team’s key veterans for the upcoming season. Chan, who describes himself as hardworking and resilient, aims to use the experience he has gained over the years to help the team reclaim the gold in this season’s tournament.
Clarence Filart
Singles expert Clarence Filart returns once more for the Blue Eagles as one of its vital cogs for this season’s campaign. Also a former team captain who has both national and collegiate-level experience, Filart hopes to help his team’s quest for gold.
Sito Fernandez
Sophomore Sito Fernandez, who has been playing badminton since his grade school days at the Ateneo, joins the team as a new weapon for the Blue Eagles in Season 80. Fernandez exudes confidence in supporting his teammates and helping out the team in any way for the upcoming season.
Gibby Paña
Gibby Paña joins Fernandez as the other rookie on the team for Season 80. Paña, who has been playing the sport since 2007 in Cagayan de Oro, believes that the team has been putting in the necessary work to achieve the feat of claiming the championship this season.
Coach’s Corner
Kennie Asuncion-Robles
After overseeing first runner-up finishes for both men’s and women’s teams last season, Kennie Asuncion-Robles once again finds herself as the team’s guiding voice on the sidelines for the upcoming UAAP Season 80.
“We’re hoping that everyone will step up and do well this season. All I ask from the team is that they give it their best, and after that, everything else will follow.”
