THE COMPANY of Ateneo Dancers (CADs) fell short of a podium finish, tallying a final score of 78.5 and finishing at 6th place in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Street Dance Competition held on Saturday, May 20 at the Plaza Mayor in the University of Santo Tomas.
The La Salle Dance Company-Street (LSDC) would walk away as champions, edging out the Season 78 Champions University of the Philippines Street Dance Club (UPSDC) by a quarter of a point, 89 to 88.75. The UAAP Street Dance Competition has been dominated by both LSDC and UPSDC since its founding in 2011, with the former nabbing championships in 2011 and 2012, and the latter grabbing the title in the last three seasons prior to relinquishing the crown this year. On the other hand, host school University of Santo Tomas (UST) was well represented, as UST Prime finished at 3rd for the second consecutive year, scoring 85.75 points.
This was the second year that CADs missed a podium finish, as the premier dance group of Ateneo was removed from their Season 77 2nd place finish last year. Despite the drop in the rankings, the piece still highlighted the core values of CADs, an organization that has long rooted itself in the passion for promoting the art and message of dance as one of its’ top priorities.
“This piece is really a celebration of dance, since we think that’s what [the UAAPSDC] is really about. It’s a competition to show the world what dancing is,” said member Anton Fausto of CADs’ piece.
However, the flood of emotions was definitely evident in the team’s post-competition gathering. The UAAPSDC training season was a trying one for the group, having had to complete their organization-wide Year-End Concert two weeks before UAAP, making the loss was a tougher pill to swallow. Street Head Joe Morabe, Street Coordinator Mikki Cortes, incoming Street Coordinator Ethan Lim and CADs moderator Clarissa Mijares Ramos all spoke up to release frustration, but ultimately shift gears to keep the team’s spirits up.
“The results on paper didn’t do any of us justice, but I can confidently say that what we put out today did everything justice,” Cortes said. The post-competition speeches seemed to lighten the spirits of the tightknit bunch who took solace in the reminder of their true purpose for dancing as one not measured by victories.
Even with the loss, the CADs Street team still racked in a strong year highlighted by a 3rd place finish in the World of Dance (WoD) Philippines Qualifiers that has earned them a place in the international competition to be held in Los Angeles, California on July 22, 2017.
The members of the UAAP Street Dance Competition competing team for CADs were:
Chloe Adarme, Jesse Cabero, Francis Calabia, Mel Carunungan, Mikki Cortes, Kat Espedido, Anton Fausto, Jake Lanada, Ethan Lim, Jolisa Madarang, Eldrick Margate, Joe Morabe, Martin Perez, Clarisse Reyes, Gaby Reyes, Alesi Salvador, Lance Tan, Angelo Tapia, Julia Temeña and Shayn Ting.
