THE ATENEO Blue and Lady Eagles continued their University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Chess tournament against the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers and Santo Tomas University (UST) Growling Tigresses, respectively on Sunday, February 5 at De La Salle University in Manila.

Blue Eagles narrowly lose to Green Archers

Building on a promising performance in the Season 79 opener against UST, the Blue Eagles looked determined to gain their first team-tie victory. Team Captain Ricki Yao took board one duties, with teammates Renzo Marquez, Gavin Ong, and Jolo Lat taking the following boards.

Despite Lat’s convincing win on board four and Yao’s half-point, the Blue Eagles could not muster another win on either of the remaining boards, with the final team-tie score at 1.5-2.5.

This loss puts the Blue Eagles at 0-2 win-loss record in the men’s division of the UAAP Chess tournament.

Team Captain Membrere earns Ateneos solitary point

The Lady Eagles’ line-up consisted of Aryanne De Ocampo, Bren Membrere, Ana De Duque, and Mine Sandoval, with Sandoval taking board one and De Ocampo, Membrere, and De Duque taking the following boards. Team captain Membrere secured the team’s only win, with the rest of the Lady Eagles being unable to outwit their opponents.

Similarly, this loss puts the Lady Eagles at 0-2 win-loss record in the women’s division of the UAAP Chess tournament.

The Blue and Lady Eagles will take on their Far Eastern University counterparts in the third team-tie of UAAP Season 79, to be held in De La Salle University, Manila, on Sunday, February 12 at 8:30AM.
