THE ATENEO Blue Eagles are continuing to step up and remain consistent in the tournament, as they stood undefeated in the team-tie match against the University of the East (UE), 5-0, on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.

This win puts the blue shuttlers in a 2-1 record in the University of Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Badminton tournament.

Compared the previous matches, the blue shuttlers dominated the Red Warriors, winning each match in two sets. Team Captain Sean Chan opened the team-tie, leading UE’s Donesa with 12 points (19-7) due to the errors committed by the Red Warrior. The second set saw a better sweep for Chan as Donesa had difficulty keeping up with the pace of Chan’s drives. The team captain quickly ended the first round in two sets, 21-10 and 21-9.

In the second singles match, Emilio Mangubat showed prowess over UE’s Manlalangit, as he tested the Red Warrior’s skills in various positions— ranging from drop shots to smashes— and he eventually swept the first set with an ending score of 21-6. The second set proved to be more difficult as Manlalangit caught up to Mangubat’s lead due to a streak (10-7). But after an unanticipated smash by Manlalangit onto Mangubat’s half of the court, Mangubat finished the set with a six-point streak (21-15)

In the first doubles match of the third round, Carlo Remo and Hans Bernardo faced UE’s David and Camacho. The first set went on smoothly for the Ateneo pair as they opened the set with an 8-point run before the UE tandem was able to score. Although errors by Remo and Bernardo contributed to the free points of UE, the blue shuttlers prevented their opponents from reaching double digits by the end of the first set (21-9). In the second set, UE was able to gain the lead (6-8), until Remo tied the score with a jump smash of his own (10-10). This enabled the blue shuttlers to get back into focus, resulting to another victory for the Blue Eagles (21-13).

In the second doubles match and fourth round of the team-tie, Fides Bagasbas and Patrick Gecosala struggled through the first set as UE’s Manlalangit and Cruz drew first blood by scoring a 6-0 run. The Blue Eagles returned a 4-point streak in the next, but allowed the UE pair to be first to reach the 11-point mark. However, tables turned as Gecosala’s drive kicked-off Ateneo’s opportunity of lead the set and end it in their favor (21-17). Determined to enter the set in a stronger fashion, the Bagasbas and Gecosala entered into a seesaw battle, until the blue shuttlers took over after the tie at 15-all to end the match (21-18).

The final match featured veteran Clarence Filart going against UE’s David. Filart started the set, trailing behind David until he was able to reach 11 points first before David. The set spawned into a series of quick exchanges between Filart and David, which ended with one giving into a mishit. As David incurred more mishits than Filart, the blue shuttler was able to take the first set, 21-15. The opening of the second set spelled out differently for Filart as he led the all throughout the set, with David only coming close by one point. This enabled Filart to take the final match of team-tie (21-16).

Team Captain Sean Chan commended his team for being more consistent in the ongoing elimination rounds. “I think what improved among us was our confidence, otherwise, I think that we all played better because we felt better as well.”

Their next game will be against the defending champions, National University Bulldogs, on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
