TEAM PHILIPPINES—composed of the members from the Ateneo Rifle-Pistol Team (ARPT) failed to the advance to the finals in the four shooting events joined by the team in the 18th ASEAN University Games on Thursday and Friday, July 14-15, 2016 at SAFRA Yishun in Singapore.

On Thursday, In the Men’s 10m Air Pistol Individual qualifiers, Jose Altoveros, Leonard Floresta, and Ian Quintin ranked 11th, (546-6x), 12th (528-7x), and 13th (507-8x) respectively, failing to get into the top 8, which was the requirement to move on to the finals.

The three then teamed up for the Men’s 10m Air Pistol team event, where they finished 4th, raking up a total of 1581 points and hitting the “X” ring 21 times.

In the Women’s 10m Air Pistol individual qualifiers, Nicole Mercado and Sherry Gonida finished 13th (319-3x) and 14th (317-5x), hence both were unable to enter to finals as well.

On Friday, Jordan Cruz failed to make the finals for the Men’s 10m Air Rifle competition, placing 10th with a score of 556 in the qualifiers.

“It really got to our nerves because its all our first international competition” said women’s captain Sherry Gonida when asked about the team’s performance.

Cruz agreed as he mentioned that “Our performances were how they were because of the pressure. It’s really just the pressure. In training, almost all of us have scored higher than what we have here, but it’s the pressure of it all. Shooting is only part physical, the rest of it is in your head.”
