ROUND 10 and 11 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 78 Chess tournament was held from March 5 to 6 at the Henry Sy Sr. Hall in De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila.

Blue Eagles

Saturday’s contest saw the Blue Eagles drop a 1.5-2.5 score against the University of the Philippines (UP). It was another upset for the squad, as Team Captain Jem Garcia suffered his second individual loss in the tournament and of his entire UAAP playing career. However, Jude Que was able to draw in his match while Penny Bonifacio’s win secured a point to salvage the day for the blue woodpushers.

Meanwhile, the 11th round saw Garcia recover by winning his match and Bonifacio garnering a draw, as the Katipunan-based squad fell to another 1.5-2.5 loss, this time, to third-placed Far Eastern University (FEU). It was a crucial result for the Eagles, as the match was an opportunity for them to rally in their campaign to reach third place in the overall standings. However, the end of the weekend has left them at sixth place instead.

Lady Eagles

The Lady Eagles finished the 10th round by losing to the fifth-placed National University. Team Captain Bren Membrere’s win was the only point for the lady woodpushers, who ultimately lost 1-3.

Sunday’s matchup meanwhile, did not see a change in the fortunes of the Lady Eagles. Membrere’s draw was the only thing preventing a sweep, as the lady woodpushers fell 0.5-3.5 against the third-placed UP. The Blue and White remain in last place with three rounds left to play in the tournament.

Round 12 will see the Blue Eagles face DLSU and the Lady Eagles against FEU at 1:00 PM, Saturday, March 12 at the Henry Sy Sr. Hall in DLSU, Manila.
