THE ATENEO Blue Eagles defeated the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors, 2-1 on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in the Ateneo de Manila University.

The Blue Eagles opened up the scoring in the 40th minute, when Mikko Mabanag’s corner kick was inadvertently knocked past the goal line by UE’s own keeper. The error led to Mabanag being credited for the goal.

This, however, was quickly undone by the Red Warriors in the 43rd minute, when a long range effort hit the Ateneo’s crossbar but bounced back into play for an easy tap in by Khyndale Manzo.

However, the home team got their winning goal in the 62nd minute, as Jarvey Gayoso crossed the ball in from the byline for Julian Roxas to slot it into the back of the net.

“We needed this one,” Roxas said after the game. “It’s been a dismal first half of the season. We’ve lost four times. We needed this win to get our confidence back.”

Due to the hot weather during the contest, officials called for water breaks at the 25th and 71st minutes.

The win puts the blue booters at 3-0-4 and a goal difference of +1 to end the first elimination round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 Men’s Football tournament.

The second elimination round is slated to begin on March 13, 2016.
