THE ATENEO Blue and Lady Eagles had a combined 1-3 record during the second day of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Taekwondo tournament on Thursday, October 15 at the Blue Eagle Gym in Ateneo de Manila University.

The Blue Eagles nabbed the lone victory for the Ateneo jins, as they won 5-2 against National University. Aaron Agojo (11-3), Marc Frigillana (13-9), Noy Garcia (7-3), Joel Alejandro (11-7), and Jeff Alejandro (3-1) all contributed for the Blue and White as they took down the Bulldogs.

Their second game proved to be the opposite, as the blue jins succumbed to University of the East with a 2-5 score. Dominant performances by both Agojo (16-4) and Jo. Alejandro (9-1) could not offset their defeat at the hands of the Red Warriors.

“I’m not frustrated because my team still did their best,” Agojo said. “I saw their effort in the game but I know they can still give more effort to win.”

Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles dropped a heartbreaker when they went up 3-0 against De La Salle University after wins by Irene Bermejo (6-5), Weedee Valenzuela (6-5), and Aivy De Asis (4-3). Unfortunately, the rest of the team could not sustain the momentum as they ended the game with a 3-4 score.

They immediately competed against University of the Philippines to avenge themselves but still faced a 2-5 defeat to the Lady Maroons. Bermejo and Valenzuela were the only lady jins who won with scores of 10-8 and 8-2, respectively.

The Blue Eagles stand at 2-2 and the Lady Eagles at 0-4 in the elimination round standings of the UAAP Season 78 Taekwondo tournament.

The Juniors division and poomsae competition will commence on Wednesday, October 21 at the Blue Eagle Gym, Ateneo de Manila University.
