THE ATENEO Lady Eagles defeated the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws (FEU), 48-46 on Sunday, September 27 at the Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City.

Right out of the gate, the Lady Eagles were full of energy as they looked to use last Wednesday’s heartbreaking defeat to the Lady Archers as motivation. The game started out at a frantic pace, featuring end-to-end action throughout the first quarter. Both teams traded basket for basket, which led to a tied game after the first.

The Lady Eagles’ strategy throughout the match was to play through veteran Danica Jose. The team’s confidence in her during their halfcourt sets was paramount to their success throughout the game. She was able to convert using her arsenal of post moves to push their lead to as much as 10 points.

Hazelle Yam was also a key player in the Blue and White’s victory, as she relentlessly drove to the basket throughout the contest. Her ability to convert on these shots, as well as lead the Lady Eagles’ fastbreak charges by leaking out as soon as they secured a defensive rebound, were crucial for easy baskets.

With Jose and Yam carrying the Eagles on offense, it was Team Captain Kai Javier who was their anchor on defense. It was through her that the Lady Eagles were able to get these shot attempts in the first place, as her solid work in the passing lanes led to multiple possessions for the Blue and White.

Jose led the Blue and White with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Yam followed Jose’s offensive output with 16 points on 8/13 shooting.

This win puts the Lady Eagles at 2-4 in the elimination round standings of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78.

Their next game will be against Adamson University, 1 PM, Sunday, October 4 at the Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City.
