Ateneo Blue Spikers earn 10th win

THE ATENEO Blue Spikers proved to be victorious once again as they earned their 10th win of the elimination round against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws (FEU) in four sets, 17- 25, 25- 17, 25- 17 and 27- 25, on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the Fil Oil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

This win puts the Blue Spikers at 10- 2 in the elimination round standings.

The Blue Spikers opened the match with a disappointing first game, but they immediately came back strong in the succeeding the sets until they took the game from the FEU Tamaraws.

The first set resulted in favor of FEU as the Blue Spikers ceded numerous points to the opposing team due to errors and violations. Furthermore, the FEU Tamaraws showed prowess in their skill of reception and blocking, ending the set with an outstanding lead of eight points against the Blue Spikers.

The Blue Spikers were definitely not discouraged by the previous set as they immediately bounced back. In the second set, they slowly improved by keeping a close fight with FEU. Upon reaching the score of 18-15, Team Captain Ysay Marasigan, Marck Espejo and Rex Intal continously garnered points for the team through their excellent attacks and blocks. Josh Villanueva ended the set in favor of Ateneo with a score of 25- 17.

The Ateneo Blue Spikers opened the third set with three consecutive points. Ish Polvorosa also gathered enough momentum in his play, especially in his service as he was able to pull off four service aces in the entire game. The Blue Spikers continued to grow stronger in their attacks, while the Tamaraws started to commit several errors and violations. This led to a result of 25-17 win for the Blue and White.

The last set was the most crucial of the game, as both teams remained steadfast as long- duration rallies between the teams were present althroughout the set. The close fight lasted until the match point that was scored by Polvorosa at a score of 24-22. The Tamaraws bounced back and brought the game to a tie at 24-24, but another FEU error gave Ateneo another match point at 26-25. Ateneo took the game with a score of 27-25.

The Blue Spikers had a 10-point difference against the FEU Tamaraws. They also tallied eight successful blocks and seven service aces.

Espejo topped the team in scoring with 21 points, followed up by Marasigan with 15 and Intal with 14. Polvorosa distributed the ball with 31 excellent sets while Tomie Rivera notched 14 digs.

Their next game will be against the De La Salle Green Archers at 10 AM, Wednesday, February 18, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
