Cum laude graduate qualifies for 8th Developing Asia Journalism Awards 2013
Alumnus David Bryan Lozada (AB COM ’13) is among the 25 finalists of the 8th Developing Asia Journalism Awards (DAJA): Regionalism in Asia vs. Globalization. Through the DAJA program, the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) recognizes the efforts of journalists in developing countries in Asia and the Pacific. Lozada, a multimedia reporter and partnership manager of Rappler’s MovePH, was chosen for his three in-depth reports: “PH migration report: Number of OFWs increasing,” “Hiring of OFWs in Taiwan back on track – MecO,” and “ASEAN Economic Community: Are we ready for 2015?” Finalists are invited to the DAJA forum on November 21 to 22 at the ADBI office in Tokyo, Japan. New courses offered by the Interdisciplinary Studies Department
The Interdisciplinary Studies Department’s new course, entitled “IS131.17: Creative Thinking and Practice,” is open to Computer Science, Development Studies, Information Design, Interdisciplinary Studies, Management, Management Information Systems, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology sophomores and juniors. The course will delve into the process of innovating interdisciplinary responses and offering concrete applications. It aims to challenge students to use their analytical, reflective and creative thinking skills parallel to their field of discipline on the identified issues and problems. Joline S. Acampado
DISCS offers a new interdisciplinary course
The Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS) is offering a new interdisciplinary course entitled “CS195.01: Computers and Society.” The course will be offered to all undergraduate students of the Loyola Schools beginning this semester. The course aims to shed light on the issues surrounding digital games. Teachers of the said course include the Theology Department Lecturer Marie Elisa Borja, Psychology Department Lecturer Katrina May Dulay, Philosophy Department Lecturer Roy Allan Tolentino and Communication Department Lecturer Andrew Ty. Filipino Department assistant professor wins two awards at the 32nd National Book Awards
The book of Filipino Department Assistant Professor Edgar Samar, PhD entitled Sa Kasunod ng 909 won the Juan C. Laya Prize for Best Novel in a Philippine Language in the 32nd National Book Awards. Meanwhile, Samar’s Halos Isang Buhay: Ang Manananggal sa Pagsusulat ng Nobela won the Isagani R. Cruz Prize for Best Book of Literary Criticism or Literary History in a Philippine Language. Two instructors get works published
Filipino Department instructors Allan Popa and Allan Derain have published new books respectively. Popa launched his newest poetry book entitled Drone last September 30 at Faber Hall under the Ateneo de Manila University Press. The book contains English poems such as “To Make The Dead Lose His Way Back,” “Aftermath,” “Feathers” and “Lake,” among others. Meanwhile, Derain launched his novel Ang Banal na Aklat ng mga Kumag on November under the Cacho Publishing House. This book won the grand prize in the 2011 Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature for the Nobela category. Tristan B. Gamalinda
Ateneo joins the Dies Asean-QA stakeholder conference
The Ateneo was one of the 21 universities that participated in the Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Quality Assurance (Dies Asean-QA) Stakeholder Conference held from October 9 to 11 in Bangkok, Thailand. The Ateneo representatives include the following: Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Eduardo Calasanz, Electronics, Computer and Communication Engineering Department Chair Rosuela Reyes, PhD, School of Science and Engineering Dean Evangeline Bautista, PhD, Ateneo Graduate School of Business Curriculum Coordinator Ricardo Palo, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs of the Loyola Schools Ma. Celeste Gonzalez, PhD and Academic Vice President of Ateneo de Naga Alfredo Fabay, PhD. Ateneo places 2nd in InterCollegiate Finance Competition
A team of three Ateneans won second place in the 15th InterCollegiate Finance Competition (ICFC) held last October 21 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in Pasay City. The ICFC, organized by the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines, is the longest-running finance quiz competition in the country. The team of Ateneans was composed of management engineering senior Joan Catherine Co and applied mathematics and finance seniors Arthur Allan Cabrera and John Russel Virata. They were coached by John Gokongwei School of Management Acting Dean Darwin Yu, PhD. The test questions were patterned after the Chartered Financial Analyst Level 1 Examination. The delegates from the University of the Philippines-Diliman and Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Manila bagged first and third place, respectively. Ennah A. Tolentino
Vilches listed as one of the first British Education Ambassadors
Acting Loyola Schools Vice President and School of Humanities Dean Maria Luz Vilches, PhD has been recognized by the British Embassy as one of the first seven British Education Ambassadors from the Philippines. The other six are Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone Authority Chair and Administrator Christopher Arnuco, Malacañang Undersecretary for Political Affairs Jose Luis Gascon, Life Science Innovation consultant Karen Hipol and Department of Finance Secretary Roberto de Ocampo. All are alumni from schools in the United Kingdom; Vilches finished her doctorate degree in Lancaster University in 2001.
