Ateneo, Le Cordon Bleu forms partnership for HRM In response to the growing demand for tourism and hospitality management, the Ateneo, through its new partnership with Le Cordon Bleu International, will be providing opportunities for students to learn hotel and restaurant management and entrepreneurship. University President Jose Ramon Villarin, SJ and Le Cordon Bleu International President Andre Cointreau signed the agreement between the two institutions last November 8, 2013. The hospitality management programs will be offered in the Loyola Schools and Graduate School of Business. The courses will be offered starting 2015. The Ateneo is the first university in the Philippines to have a partnership with Le Cordon Bleu. Pauline V. Miranda SOSS offers new courses for the second semester The School of Social Sciences is offering two new courses this semester. The Sociology and Anthropology Department’s new multidisciplinary course entitled “SocSci 109: Understanding the Self: The Person, Community and Nation” centers on the examination of the self as it develops in different contexts. It is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. The History Department also launched a free elective entitled “Hi 170: Overview of Philippine History from Primary Sources.” It deals with a broad survey of Philippine political, social, economic and cultural history with the use of primary sources. It is open to junior and senior students. Mariel L. Zamora David Bryan Lozada (AB Comm ‘13) was recognized as the Young Development Journalist of the Year at the awarding ceremony of the 2013 Developing Asia Journalism Awards (DAJA) held last November 21 in Tokyo, Japan. The award is given to a journalist under the age of 30 for having the best-written article among all the finalists. Lozada was chosen for his article entitled “Asean Economic Community: Are we ready for 2015?” The DAJA program, as sponsored by the Asian Development Bank Institute, distinguishes the efforts of journalists in developing countries across Asia and the Pacific. Lozada is currently a multimedia reporter and partnership manager of Rappler’s Move PH. Mariel L. Zamora 378 individuals lauded in University Service Awards Members of the administration, faculty, staff and personnel who have served in the Ateneo for at least five years were recognized in the 36th University Service Awards held on November 21 at the High School Covered Courts. Among the notable awardees are the following: Vice President for Social Development Atty. Jaime Hofileña (five years), University President Jose Ramon Villarin, SJ (10 years), School of Social Sciences Dean Filomeno Aguilar, PhD (15 years), Associate Dean for Student Affairs Rene San Andres (20 years), Theology Department Professor Adolfo Dacanay, SJ (25 years), Art Management Program Coordinator Rene Javellana, SJ (25 years), Philosophy Department Chair Agustin Rodriguez, PhD (25 years), Vice President for Professional Schools Antonette Palma-Angeles, PhD (30 years), Philosophy Department Professor Manuel Dy, Jr., PhD (45 years), and Professor Emeritus Roque Ferriols, SJ (50 years). Service pins were awarded to those who have served for five years, while those who have served for 10, 15 and 20 years were given service plaques. Those who have served for 25 years were given service plaques and monetary awards, while those who have served for more than 30 years were given monetary awards and service certificates. Pauline V. Miranda SBFI, Ateneo donate buildings to two elementary schools in Mandaue The Security Bank Foundation, Inc. (SBFI), in partnership with the Ateneo de Manila University, turned over two new school buildings worth 14.5 million pesos to the Mandaue City government last November 7. These buildings, with six classrooms each, were made for Basak Elementary School and Jagobiao Elementary School. As of press time, the SBFI has been able to donate 89 school buildings nationwide. Tristan B. Gamalinda Ateneo de Manila University Press organizes mass book launch The Ateneo de Manila University Press organized a mass book launch entitled “Harvest” held at the 5th floor of the Rizal Library on November 28. This event launched the publication of 20 new titles in 2013. These books titles from the following authors: Merlie Alunan, Lamberto Antonio, Lisandro Claudio, Kristian Sendon Cordero, Fr. Francisco Jose Caluag Cruz, CM, Alwynn Javier, James Keenan, Harry Arlo Nimmo, Benjamin Pimentel, Macario Pineda, Mark Poffenberger and Allan Popa among others. The Ateneo de Manila University Press plans to hold another mass book launch on July 2014. Tristan B. Gamalinda IS Department holds sessions featuring Ateneo alumnae In celebration of 40 years of coeducation in the Ateneo de Manila University, the Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) Department organized a three-part series of talks held at the Faura Hall Audio-Visual Room. Mercado Alcantara (AB IS ‘87) and Ella Melendez (AB IS ‘85) were featured in the first talk held on November 19. In line with the theme “Storytelling: When Were Not Looking,” the alumnae discussed the call to creativity and its unexpected career paths. Meanwhile, Chemistry Department Lecturer Assunta Cuyegkeng, PhD (BS Chem ‘80) talked about the challenges of sustainable development and its implications with regard to simple living in a talk held on November 26 with the theme “Living Simply: Reflections on Spirituality and Sustainability.” The final session featured Debbie Tan (AB IS ‘79) on December 17 with the theme “Risk: The worst thing the could happen?” Tan discussed how to apply enterprise risk management to real life situations.
