Acomm launches Magis Radio
Magis Radio, the first student-run Internet radio for the Ateneo, was launched last September 13 at the Cervini Field. The Magis Radio Launch was organized by the Ateneo Association of Communication Majors (Acomm). The performers during the event were the following: DJ Arthur Tan, AJMA Dance Troupe, Acommpany, Fire Underwater, The Cohens, Dressed Up Days, Dearest,, She’s Only Sixteen and Never The Strangers. The Magis Radio shows are as follows: “Magis Mic in the Morning,” “Musikolehiyo,” “Feeling Critics,” “The Playlist,” “Manic Mondays,” “Wawa Wednesdays,” “Feel Good Fridays” and “Atenistalk.” Magis Radio started airing last September 16. Shows run every Monday and Wednesday from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM, and every Friday from 12:00 to 4:30 PM. All the disc jockeys for the radio station are Acomm members. Samantha O. Subida
Two alumni hailed as Outstanding Students of the Philippines
Gio Alejo (BS HSc ’13) and Delfin Villafuerte (BS ME ’13) were among the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) of 2013. The TOSP annually recognizes “young role models” for their academic excellence, leadership, good morals and community involvement. Alejo, last year’s Sanggunian president, is currently a first year medical student at the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health. Meanwhile, Villafuerte, who graduated class valedictorian, is now teaching at a public school in Quezon City under Teach for the Philippines. ASMPH gets 100% passing rate in August 2013 Physician Licensure Examination
The second batch of graduates from the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH) had a 100% passing rate in the August 2013 Physician Licensure Examination. Two of the top ten passers of the board exam are ASMPH graduates. Ruth Divine Agustin ranked third with a score of 88.67% and Pamela Marie Imperial placed ninth with 87.92%. Mariel L. Zamora
Ateneo Law students win Asia Cup International Law Moot Court Competition
Ateneo de Manila University alumni Carlo Agdamag (AB Ec ’11), Yul Araya (BS LM ’10), Leo Galang (AB PoS ‘12) and Steffi Sales (AB PoS ’12) put the Philippines at the top spot in the Asia Cup International Law Moot Court Competition held in Tokyo, Japan last August 27 to 28. The four students currently studying in the Ateneo Law School represented the Philippine team. They won the national round of the said competition last July 22. The Asia Cup International Moot Court Competition is an event hosted by the Japanese Society of International Law and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. It aims to gauge law students’ ability to write memorials and oral pleadings on a theoretical lawsuit case concerning international human rights. This year, the participants dealt with a hypothetical case of a journalist’s death in a conflict zone. Fabian Dayrit launches book on coconut oil
Chemistry Department Professor Fabian M. Dayrit, PhD launched his book Coconut Oil: From Diet to Therapy under Anvil Publishing, Inc. at the Megatrade Hall 1 of SM Megamall last August 31. He co-wrote this book with his father, the late Dr. Conrado S. Dayrit. This book is the second edition of Conrado S. Dayrit’s The Truth About Coconut Oil, which was released in 2005. It is in these books that Dayrit and his father built the argument for the health benefits of coconut oil. Mariel L. Zamora
Leloy Claudio releases his first book
Political Science Department Instructor Lisandro “Leloy” Claudio, PhD released his first book entitled Taming People’s Power: The EDSA Revolutions and their Contradictions. Claudio’s book talks about how the narrative of the 1986 People Power Revolution was shaped and how it continues to influence contemporary politics. The book was published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press and was launched last September 3. It is based on Claudio’s doctoral thesis at the University of Melbourne. Mara D. Cepeda
