Theo prof recognized for teaching excellence

Theology Assistant Professor Roberto Guevara, PhD received the 2012 Henry Lee Irwin Memorial Teacher Award for his dedication in the field of education. Guevara was given recognition during the Ateneo’s Awards of Excellence at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater last December 13, 2012. The awarding ceremonies are held once every three years. Jose C. Cua


Sintang Dalisay bags two Aliw Awards

Tanghalang Ateneo’s Sintang Dalisay bagged two out of their five nominations at the 25th Aliw Awards. Sintang Dalisay won Best Non-Musical Production while Ricardo Abad, PhD won Best Stage Director (Non-Musical). The awards, which honor the best in Philippine performing arts, were held at the Fiesta Pavilion, Manila Hotel last November 26. The production garnered other nominations: Kalil Almonte for Best Actor (Non-Musical), Brian Sy for Best Actor in a Featured Role, and Edru Abraham for Best Musical Director. It is now the Ateneo theater production that has earned the most nominations from the award-giving body. Henry I. Oh


Chicago museum honors Ateneo alumna

The Field Museum in Chicago, USA bestowed on Angelina Ingle, PhD (BS Bio ’85) the Parker/Gentry Award last October 11. Ingle is the president and founding member of the Wildlife Conservation Society of the Philippines. Ingle has been active in biodiversity conservation, of which her focus was on bats. The Parker/Gentry Awards recognize conservation efforts. Jose C. Cua


Acomm launches internet radio station

The Ateneo Association of Communication Majors (Acomm) has launched an internet radio station for the Loyola Schools community. The radio booth will be located at the Eugenio Lopez Jr. Center for Multimedia Communication in the Social Sciences Building. Acomm is coordinating with its moderator and Communication Department Chair Mark Vincent Escaler for the project, as well as external groups like Jesuit Communications and Radio Republic. Associate Vice President for Projects Eunice Dauz said, “We want to build a community through this radio, a stronger and more united Ateneo community.” Henry I. Oh


Int’l artist honored in academic convocation

Contemporary artist David Medalla was conferred the Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi in a Special Academic Convocation last November 27. Medalla has been recognized internationally as “an important figure in the history of art as a pioneer of kinetic, earth, performance, participation, and conceptual art.” Following the convocation, his exhibit entitled, “Tuloy Po Kayo,” was opened at the Ateneo Art Gallery. “Team Resbak” secures PR Grand Prix win

Six Ateneans competing as “Team Resbak” won first place in the annual Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) Grand Prix with their PR plan “Philhealth: Ang Resbak ng Buhay Mo!” last November 18. The team created a social media campaign for the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth), which centered on their proposed mascot Mang Phil. The theme “YOUth on Social Media” highlighted social media as an emerging power in the PR industry and how the youth can utilize this as a catalyst for change. The Grand Prix Competition tasks delegates from universities nationwide to come up with a communications plan based on a given case study. Ennah A. Tolentino


Ateneans honored at AMY IP Awards

Three individuals from the Chemistry Department were recognized at the 2012 Ambassador Alfredo M. Yao Intellectual Property (AMY IP) Awards last October 11 at the Manila Hotel. The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines gave the awards to individuals from different schools and universities who supported the recognition and development of Filipino-owned intellectual property rights. Associate Professor Erwin Enriquez and Jerick Imbao (BS CH ’12) won the AMY IP Award for Luzon and NCR for their work entitled “Method for Producing Carbon from Glycerol,” while Assistant Instructor Eunice Biteng and her co-workers from the University of the Philippines Manila won the National AMY IP Award for their work entitled “Diagnosis and Detection of Dengue Virus Infection Using Chicken Egg Antibodies.” Enriquez and Imbao received a P75,000 cash prize from the PCCI, while Biteng received P250,000.
