Ateneo professors receive Silver Pillar award

Fabian Dayrit, PhD of the Chemistry Department and Catherine Vistro-Yu, PhD of the Mathematics Department were made recipients of the Silver Pillar award. The Silver Pillar is a recognition granted by the Department of Science and Technology’s Science Education Institute (SEI) in celebration of its 25th anniversary. The award is presented to individuals or institutions that have significantly contributed to the development of science education in the country as partners of SEI.

Dayrit, former dean of the School of Science and Engineering, is a member of the National Academy of Science and Technology. Vistro-Yu is an elected member of the Executive Committee of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction and was selected as one of this year’s Outstanding Teachers for the Higher Education Level by the Metrobank Foundation. The professors were formally handed their awards at the Garden Ballroom, EDSA Shangri-La Hotel last September 19. Ennah A. Tolentino


SOH, JGSOM course on leadership featured in Shanghai conference

A Loyola Schools interdisciplinary course on leadership that uses the methodology of theater was featured at the 3rd International Conference of Performance Studies at the Shanghai Theater Academy last September 14 to 15. Ricardo Abad, PhD of the Sociology and Anthropology Department spoke about the leadership course, which he designed and teaches. He also gave a demonstration workshop titled “Making Connections: Business School Leadership Training” to the Chinese participants. The conference focused on ways in which theater can be used in various fields beyond the stage. The Fine Arts Program of the School of Humanities and the Department of Leadership and Strategy of the John Gokongwei School of Management jointly offer the course. Henry I. Oh


COA and La Salle CSO hold Ugnayan 2012 in Ateneo

This year’s Ugnayan Leadership Summit finally pushed through on November 10, after having been postponed last September 15 due to inclement weather. With the theme “Ugnayan 2012: Great Minds, Groundbreaking Ideas” this year, the event is an annual leadership summit held for organization leaders of the Ateneo and De La Salle University (DLSU). The summit aims to promote networking and collaboration among them. The Council of Organizations of the Ateneo and the DLSU Council of Student Organizations arranged the said event. Maebel R. SOSE students bag awards in BMAP Biofest 2012

Fifth year biology major Angelica Tangco and junior life sciences major Miguel Justin Martinez brought home awards from the Biology Majors Alliance of the Philippines (BMAP) Biofest, an annual student biology congress. Tangco reigned over the other contestants as she garnered the title Ultimate Female Warrior, Bio Ms. Earth 2012. Martinez came out second best and was named the Guardian of Biodiversity, Bio Mr. Earth 2012. The BMAP Biofest was held last September 29 at the Emilio Aguinaldo College. Bio Mr. and Ms. Earth is a body painting pageant organized by BMAP for the Biofest. Nicole E. Sanglay


Curriculum Committee approves new courses

The Ateneo Curriculum Committee has given the green light for new courses that students may enroll in. Some of these courses are the following: CH 255.1 (Principles and Practice of Personalized Molecular Medicine I), CS 268.1 (Quantitative Trading Simulation) and FA-CW 131.1 (Writing for Children). Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Eduardo Calasanz assisted the committee in the deliberations. The newly approved courses will be offered under the discretion of their respective departments. Maebel R. Joaquin
