There is a never-ending discussion on whether TV and film adaptations are better than their literary sources. Here are a couple of onscreen adaptations of Filipino romance novels.

Kristine

This ABS-CBN soap opera is based on Martha Cecilia’s Kristine, a series of books about two rival families: the Fortalejos and the De Silvas. The story revolves around the Fortalejos sisters (Cristine Reyes and Denise Laurel), who fall in love with a De Silva (Zanjoe Marudo).

Precious Hearts Romances Presents

Running for three seasons now, ABS-CBN’s TV adaptation of the best-selling romance pocketbooks features bestsellers like Bud Brothers and My Cheating Heart, both starring Jake Cuenca.

Ligo Na Ü, Lapit Na Me

This Cinemalaya 2011 entry is an adaptation of Eros S. Atalia’s novel of the same name, the story of “star-crossed lovers” Intoy (Edgar Allan Guzman), who is poor and street-smart, and Jenny (Mercedes Cabral), who is rich and quirky.
