2012 Class Valedictorian is TOSP awardee

Kenneth Abante, the valedictorian of the class of 2012, was recognized as one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) last August 2. According to the TOSP Alumni Community website, the TOSP seeks to recognize students who show “academic excellence, exemplary leadership, good moral values, and socio-civic consciousness.” Abante graduated cum laude with a degree in management engineering and was the president of the Council of Organizations of the Ateneo in his senior year. He currently works at the Department of Finance. Pauline V. Miranda


ASOG launches program for innovative dev’t

The Ateneo School of Government, together with the National Research Council of the Philippines, launched the University and Councils Network for Innovation for Inclusive Development, also known as UNIID-SEA. According to the project’s website, the aim of the Innovation for Inclusive Development is to reduce poverty, encourage interclass participation and likewise share the benefits of development. The project facilitates collaborations in knowledge and platform sharing among different universities and research councils in Southeast Asia. Maebel R. Joaquin


Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas Award conferred on IS prof

Rofel G. Brion, PhD, of the Interdisciplinary Studies Department, won the 2012 Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas from the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (Umpil). The Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas is annually given to respected writers in Filipino who have devoted their lives and energy toward Filipino literature and educating others about it. The awarding ceremonies took place last August 25. Billy B. Poon


Mathematics professor is Metrobank Awardee

Catherine Vistro-Yu, PhD of the Mathematics Department received the Outstanding Teacher Award in the Higher Education category from the Metrobank Foundation. The awarding ceremonies were held on September 5. Vistro-Yu is the third faculty member of her department to receive the honor. The Metrobank Foundation’s Search for Outstanding Teachers was launched in 1984, conducted annually in cooperation with the Department of Education and the Commision on Higher Education. The foundation aims to recognize the teachers with contributions to national development, and through this, inspire other teachers in the country to achieve excellence in their areas of teaching. Kritika Kultura focuses on transnational issues

This year, the lecture series of Kritika Kultura (KK) tackled themes such as diaspora, translation and globalization. KK also launched a monograph entitled Call for Papers, which talks about the Chinese diaspora in the country. Managing Editor Mayel Martin said that the lecture series is an avenue where points of research hatch from an exchange of ideas. The lecture series component of KK invites scholars and researchers from international and local networks to speak in the Ateneo. KK, founded and headed by Maria Luisa Torres-Reyes, PhD of the English Department, is an internationally refereed e-journal on literary, cultural and language studies. Ennah A. Tolentino
