AFTER THEIR first loss of the season last Wednesday to the University of Santo Tomas (UST), the Lady Beach Spikers looked to test their maturity to bounce back against Far Eastern University (FEU) on September 10 at the UE Caloocan sand courts.
The Atenean tandem of Bea Tan and Alyssa Valdez were matched up against FEU’s Shedd de La Pena and Loryvel Faytaren.
At the start of the first set, the Lady Beach Spikers looked to avoid the same mistakes they committed against UST. True enough, their adjustments this time around opened up opportunities for easy sets and spikes.
Unforced errors and lapses of miscommunication between the FEU pair were abundant, due in part to excellent ball placement from the Katipunan-based duo. Tan and Valdez left the Tamaraws nailed at 13 in the scoreboard, as they grabbed an easy first set win, 21-13.
After their dominating performance in the first, the Lady Beach Spikers grabbed all the momentum they needed in the succeeding set. The second set proved to be following the same script as the first, as the Ateneans never looked back. The duo denied FEU’s offense by blocking their attacks with the consistency of their returns.
FEU adjusted from their first set loss by cutting down on unforced errors, but Ateneo’s offense was too much for the Lady Tamaraws to handle. Thunderous spikes resulting from well-executed sets by Tan and Valdez overwhelmed the FEU pair. Ateneo broke away with the second set and the game to the score of 21-17.
With the win, the Lady Beach Spikers are now at 5-1 in the standings, sharing the top spot with UST. Adamson is not too far behind with a 4-2 record. FEU falls to third place with the loss, tied with DLSU and UE at 3-3.
Catch Ateneo in their next game as they go against the UE Amazons. The Lady Beach Spikers are aiming for a 6-1 record on September 11, 9:00 AM at the UE Caloocan sand courts.
