Atenean formation elsewhere

The GUIDON takes a look at the other Ateneo universities’ respective versions of the Loyola Schools’ Integrated Non-Academic Formation (INAF) program.

Ateneo de Naga

Freshmen have the required NSTP. Students are also required to be part of the Community Outreach Program (COP), where they engage in house-building, tree-planting and mangrove-planting. COP is required for graduation and can be taken in any year the student prefers.

Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan

Freshmen have their First Year Formation Program, NSTP, and the Kristohanong Katangliban sa Pagkaban (KKP) program. KKP is Visayan for Christian Community Awareness. These programs expose freshmen to communities dealing with sustainable development concerns, and provide opportunities for student engagement in such issues—praxis for the values taught in the classroom. On the other hand, sophomores, juniors and seniors are not required to participate in any of the school’s social involvement projects and are allowed to choose what org to join.

Ateneo de Davao

Freshmen must initially undergo the First Year Development Program, which is supposed to help them adjust to university life. The program essentially functions as the freshmen’s org since they aren’t allowed to join any until the next year. Sophomores undergo the required NSTP. Juniors have ‘Ehem’ and ‘Maligdong Ako,’ where for a week, alternative education classes with workshops on integrity and honesty are held in lieu of theology lectures. Seniors have the Pedro Arrupe Service Learning Program where, for two Sundays, they are brought to the field for immersion and exposure.

Ateneo de Zamboanga

Freshmen are required to take the National Service Training Program (NSTP). Sophomores are free from any required INAF-related activity. Juniors used to have the exchange program, where they became waiters and baggers, but after an experimental year, the administration removed it. Seniors have summer service and immersion, but participating is purely voluntary.
