The GUIDON’s Official Statement on “Bring Back the Stripes”

To the Ateneo de Manila community and other concerned parties,

Last April, The GUIDON published “Bring Back the Stripes,” a story about Ateneo student athletes’ grievances over the school’s sponsorship deal with Nike. The story was based mostly on accounts by athletes themselves regarding their experience with the said sponsorship. Given that just the previous year, a rival sportswear company sponsored Ateneo’s student athletes, many of the accounts inevitably veered towards a comparison of the two company’s respective stints as sponsors.

The GUIDON’s research and interviews for the article did in fact show that there was a greater level of overall satisfaction with the previous sponsorship than the current one. Of course, the grievances about the current deal are not without reason, and this was precisely what The GUIDON sought to find out when it worked on the said story.

In keeping with The GUIDON’s identity as the official student newspaper of the Ateneo de Manila University, the paper approached the story with an angle that would most be relevant to the student body. More specifically, the story was written to cater to the interests of The GUIDON Sports section’s primary audience: Ateneo student athletes and their well-wishers. Thus, in the same way that national dailies bring the troubles of average citizens to light, The GUIDON considered the issues surrounding the sponsorship deal a legitimate and significant concern of the students; it was but natural for the paper to report on what the deal turned out to be.

We recognize, though, that there were some lapses made in the writing process for the said story, which have led the story to be incomplete. While we reassert the truth of the quoted athletes’ accounts, we realize that the writers and editors could have sought the concerned school offices’ and Nike’s comments on the matter before the story’s publication. We sincerely apologize to the affected parties, particularly the University Athletics Office and Nike, for this oversight.

At the same time, however, we would like to point out that the article ended on a note that was hopeful of an explanation from the implicated parties.

Finally, we would like to remind all concerned parties that The GUIDON is a service to the student body, not to the different Ateneo offices or to external corporate entities. The paper does not and will not refrain from reporting anything that is of significance and concern to this primary audience, even when certain school offices consider such things to be non-issues.

At the end of the day, The GUIDON is a pro-student and Atenean publication that seeks to publish content for the benefit and welfare of the student body. The GUIDON is one of the most prominent channels for student sentiment, and it is through this very nature that grievances such as the ones reported in the article even see the light of day. In this regard, we protest the adversarial treatment The GUIDON, some of its members, and even some of the athletes quoted in the article have been receiving from concerned Ateneo offices following the publication of “Bring Back the Stripes.”

In consideration of the intricacies of the situation, though, we have decided to temporarily take down the story from The GUIDON’s official website. The story will be reposted once the article includes the perspectives of all concerned parties.

  • “Finally, we would like to remind all concerned parties that The GUIDON is a service to the student body, not to the different Ateneo offices or to external corporate entities. The paper does not and will not refrain from reporting anything that is of significance and concern to this primary audience, even when certain school offices consider such things to be non-issues.”

You have the article posted in your website which allows people from Ateneo offices, from the sponsors, from the alumni body, and non-ateneo affiliated public to read it. I submit, publishing irresponsible and incomplete articles such as this does not in any way positively serve the student body. Rather, with The Guidon being a representative of the school just as much as The Collegian is for UP and The Varsitarian is for UST, articles such as these put Ateneo in general in a bad light particularly since the paper was made aware of its deficiencies prior to publishing yet refused to pull the article until after people from the Ateneo community became adversarial.

Furthermore, the paper has absolutely no right to protest such an adversarial treatment from the community when the brouhaha found its genesis in an adversarial article. If the paper is willing to be adversarial in order to “bring troubles to light”, then it follows that the adversarial treatment that the paper is receiving is necessary to “bring trouble with the paper to light”. And rightly so, the paper was compelled to pull the embarrassing article until it is satisfactorily completed.

  • You do not have to be a mouthpiece of the admin to be fair to all sides at the very least.

You are making it appear like this issue is about editorial independence, when in fact it’s all about journalism basics. Even for a run-of-the-mill story, it is basic for any journalist — or for any student who has taken Intro to Journ at the very least — to interview all sides of an issue, especially for a sensitive story like this. Or at least, to try to reach them and, if unsuccessful, write in the story: “The Guidon tried to reach so-and-so but was unable to do so as of press time.” Mahirap ba ‘yon?

No, Guidon, to neglect your duty to interview all sides is not only an oversight. It is a mortal sin in this profession. Hell, it can even count as libel!

Tapos may gana pa kayong magpa-hero ngayon? Yabang n’yo.

      • To “Che ka rin”:

You say I am self-righteous when — if you are at least a discerning reader (and writer)– you should have noticed that not once did I utter the words “I” or “me” in my reply. Nasaan ang “self” doon? Please do not stoop to using ad hominem arguments. The issue is not about me and other people who give The Guidon what you call “adversarial treatment.”

I is, again, a simple issue of journalism basics. One of these basics — to add to the principle of getting all sides of a story — is always, always, always writing and replying to reader feedback with substance.

        • Your point is clear and well conceived, Che. Still, all the damage has been done and you’re not doing anything to help by indirectly rubbing it in with your posts. The students and The Guidon have learned from their mistake and tried to make amends for it. Yes we may feel upset that The Guidon has made such a fundamental error yet how would we feel if you were in their shoes and someone was rubbing it in their faces?

        • Hello Che,

I am Luther Aquino, the Associate Editor of The GUIDON. The GUIDON does not have a policy of making official replies to readers’ comments posted on this website. Comments are unmoderated save for undue profanity, hate speech and other abusive language.

I am just replying to your point, “One of these basics — to add to the principle of getting all sides of a story — is always, always, always writing and replying to reader feedback with substance.” Lest any of the comments in this article be misconstrued to be The GUIDON’s, I would like to categorically deny that The GUIDON has replied to any of the readers’ posts in this page.

If you have any other concerns, please email me at laquino@theguidon.com. Thank you very much.

        • I’m not stooping to ad hominem… just ad shutthe****up!

Publications should adhere to fundamentals but journalism is not exempt from biases. Journalistic pieces are always written FOR something. Even if the writers had managed to adhere to journ basics like you wish they did, the article would still have been about athletes’ grievances about a sponsorship deal gone bad regardless of what Nike and UAO would have or would not have explained about delays and other issues concerning the matter. The Guidon is the voice of the studentry and it shall air out issues that concern students before being a puppet to the admin or any private external institution.

If you think you’re so good with the fundamentals of journalism basics, then sign up for the paper next year. Otherwise shut up. Nayayabangan ka pala sa statement ng The Guidon? Well FLASH NEWS: nayayabang mga tao sa comments mo.

And excuse me? Please don’t exclude yourself from YOUR statement on the basis of the usage of “I” and “me”. YOU are not separate from what you think and say regardless of whether you say it in person or from behind your computer. You ARE self-righteous and not to mention SELF-IMPORTANT. That’s not logical fallacy. It’s a plain observable fact that’s written in black and white for everyone to see.

P.S. I’m not from The Guidon

  • Ang bobo naman ng mga taga-guidon. Fairness and balance are the most basic elements of journalism, and yet you missed that? WOW. Yan ba ang tinuturo ng Ateneo sa inyo? Nakakahiya kayo.

And you call yourselves members of the official student publication of Ateneo? That’s a big shame to your school!
