Atenean Voice: What do you think of the recent increase in cost of transportation (cab fare increase, NLEX, and planned SLEX toll hike)?

“I think they are being unfair sa increase since pati gas nga mataas na ‘yung cost eh. I don’t see any reason na kailangan nila i-increase ‘yung fare especially NLEX since mataas na nga ‘yung toll fee na sinisingil nila, and increasing it will lead to increase in bus fare, delivery cost, as well as other commodities like ‘yung mga galing sa Baguio na veggies.”

– Bryant Go (V AB IS)

“Wala naman akong magagawa kasi kailangan talagang sumakay, kailangang magcommute at ‘di pwede kumontra. ‘Yun nga lang, magsusuffer ang ibang kailangang gastusan. Kahit weekly lang kami umuwi ng pamilya ko sa Laguna, nakakaapekto din ‘yun.”

–  Minda Renomeron (Administrative Assistant, ADAA Office)

“I wouldn’t like spending more money on a train that’s always full and losing its quality. Kung i-iimprove nila ‘yung facilities nila, okay lang na mag-increase ‘yung price.

– Carlos Manuel Albaña (I AB Eco)

“Ideally, increases in the costs of transportation should equate to a certain degree of improvement [in] the services they offer. Ang problema, the government insists that it was subsidizing the costs all along up to a point na hindi na nila kayang sustentuhan. Because of this, there is no clear point to increase the prices kung wala rin lang magbabago. And smaller increments in the rates could be more feasible, since it would be associated with improvements that are more relevant to the public, even if they are small.”

– Arjohn Ceperiano (III BS Psy)

“The recent move of the government increasing the fee charged by the expressways, I think, is a welcome measure only insofar as this will enhance the quality of service they provide, ensure the upkeep of the facilities, or defray the rising costs of operation. Though admittedly an added burden to the public, the increase in my opinion has to be proportionate with the need and if possible, done in increments or installment so as not to severely weigh down the people’s finances.”

– Murphy Ryan Pe (III AB Eu)

“I believe it is a sign of capitalism. Those companies, especially SLEX and NLEX are abusing their power to increase the price of their services because they are the only ones offering that kind of service. It’s unreasonable especially since the country is faced with various cases of poverty. I think the increase should be implemented after the rehabilitation period of the country.”

– Von Vincent Cruz (I BS ME)

“Okay lang ‘yun para ma-improve ‘yung mga lights… In favor ako para sa NLEX. Pero sana ‘wag mataas masyado ‘yung increase ah… Pero pwede rin ‘yun sa mga… private na mga vehicle; hindi na lang sa mga buses kasi…nakaka-hirap sa mga operator sa mga sasakyan at sa mga bus. Mga private na lang.”
