The Loyola Schools Sanggunian has had a long history of participation in national issues, going back to the growth of political consciousness in the 1960s.
Pre-1960s – The Student Council (SC) handles student and org activities, similar to the current Office of Student Activities.
1962 – A Board of External Affairs is created to “inform and encourage students to participate in current affairs.”
1965 – The SC holds talks on the Vietnam War and the Kashmir conflict.
1967 – The SC publishes articles about its stands on current issues through an ‘information section’ in The GUIDON.
1969 – Ateneans, led by SC President Edgar Jopson, join other youth groups in rallies pushing for a Constitutional Convention that is truly of the people.
1970 – The National Union of Students of the Philippines, of which the SC is a member, boycotts classes in protest of the Marcos administration.
Radical Ateneans participate in the ‘Battle of Mendiola.’
1972-4 – Martial Law dissolves the SC, which is replaced by a ‘steering committee.’
1976-85 – To commemorate the imposition of Martial Law, the revived SC declares the week of September 21 as the ‘Week of National Issues.’
1983 – Following Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr.’s death, Task Force Ninoy is created to show solidarity with the fallen hero and his cause of freedom.
1984 – Buklod Atenista, an alliance of the Student Councils in Filipino Jesuit Universities, is founded.
1986 – Around one-third of the student body participates in the People Power Revolution.
The Sanggunian ties up with Lakas ng Kabataang Pilipino, an activist student group, to campaign for a new Philippine Constitution.
1987 – Oil prices hikes are denounced by the Sanggunian Central Board (CB).
1989 – The Sanggunian issues a statement denouncing the actions of the Chinese Government in connection to the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
Members of the CB and other student organizations protest the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).
Due to increasing environmental awareness, Task Force Kalikasan is launched.
The Sanggunian issues a statement condemning the December 1989 coup attempt.
1991 – CB issues a stand calling for the withdrawal of American bases in the country.
The Sanggunian organizes efforts to help victims displaced by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo.
1999 – The Sanggunian issues a statement expressing concern about the preservation of press freedom under the Estrada administration, and protests Charter Change attempts.
2001 – With fewer students than the original EDSA Revolution, the Sanggunian and some other Ateneans participate in EDSA II.
2003 – The Sanggunian issues a stand criticizing the invasion of Iraq.
2007-8 – In widely publicized efforts, the Sanggunian and other Ateneans mobilize for the agrarian struggle of the Sumilao, Calatagan and Banasi farmers.
Amidst disagreement among national peasant organizations, the Sanggunian and other Ateneans back the passage of the CARP Extension with Reforms bill.
2009 – Task Force Ondoy, spearheaded by the Sanggunian, mobilizes majority of the community into participating in relief operations.
