After suffering a mercy rule loss (8-0, in the fifth inning) against the UST Lady Tigers, the Ateneo Lady Batters entered the game against UP looking to get back to winning ways, their prior defeat, however, would not affect their state of mind.
As they ran on the field, determined to win at whatever cost, the Lady Batters claimed their first victory over their Katipunan neighbors, 2-1, on December 8th, at the University of the Philippines field. Ironically, they would do so through something that has been costing them dearly, errors.
Early on, UP jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Ateneo once again allowed a run due to a fielding error.
Right off the bat, things were starting to look all too familiar for the Lady Batters. In the next inning, three Ateneo batters struck out while only managing to have one runner reach first base via single. The lady batters again, unable to get on the board.
Despite the lack of offense, however, the Lady Batters were able to muster up confidence through their defense, denying UP any more runs past their lone score.
At the top of the third, the situation would heat up as a Lady Batter would reach first base via single, only to end up stealing back-to-back bases to reach third—now well in scoring position for the tying run.
But, as the story has been for the Lady Batters, she was left on base, and soon UP collected the three consecutive outs.
Still Ateneo held on, despite their costly errors.
The Lady Batters sustained their solid defense; a remarkable catch by left field to deny a would-be UP double in the bottom of the fourth inning. This proved to be the spark they desperately needed.
Ateneo carried the momentum well into the top of the fifth inning as two Lady Batters quickly managed to reach scoring position—one on 2nd and one on 3rd base. Now, it was UP who played a role in their own demise with two costly back-to-back errors allowing both runners to score, putting the Lady Batters ahead 2-1.
Now with the lead, it was up to Ateneo’s defense to maintain their one run lead for six more outs, and with the way these ladies played, they would have shut them out for the rest of the afternoon.
Outstanding defense denied UP any hope of coming back into the game, and another amazing catch by left field to deny UP a runner on base was the final nail in the coffin.
The Lady Batters now hope to carry this momentum well into their next game this Saturday, December 11, against the La Salle Green Archers.
