THE ATENEO Student Leaders (ASL) swept the Freshmen elections, as six of the coalition’s members filled in the eight major positions in the official freshman roster of the Sanggunian. Special elections were also held to fill in the position of School of Social Sciences 2nd Year Central Board Representative.

The Ateneo Commission on Elections (Comelec) released the official results of the elections on August 17. Unless appeals are filed, the results will be official by August 19.

The winners for the major positions are the following:

School of Humanities (SOH)

School of Management (SOM)

School of Science and Engineering (SOSE)

School of Social Sciences (SOSS)

Roa said that not knowing if she would be able to win, she ran only with a purpose in mind. “There really was no certainty in winning. I ran because I wanted to have the chance to serve and lead,” said Roa.

Prior to the release of official results, Torres didn’t really know who would win in the elections. She said that being a part of the ASL coalition helped her get the position.

“I believe a big factor of me winning is having joined the [ASL] coalition. They helped in campaigning a lot. I got to reach out to more of my constituents that way,” said Torres.

Known for the tagline “Don’t vote straight, vote gay!” Fernandez said that he expected to win because he “worked hard to win”. He went all out with his campaign by maximizing the use of online media and not be limited to the traditional room-to-room visits.

“It was easy to connect with my constituents [online] because in posting my campaign pictures, my team and I were able to tag all potential voters. I really wanted to create that effect where [only my face will be seen all over Facebook] to spread the word about my candidacy and details for the elections,” he said.

He also said that being last year’s SOSS 1st Year Executive Officer helped him in winning the elections.

Quota reached

According to data gathered by Comelec from the Ateneo Management Information Systems Association, the overall voter turn-out can be considered a success. Only the SOH third year and SOM second year constituents didn’t reach the 50% plus one quota as only 35 out of the 200, and 275 out of the 765 students voted, respectively.

However, SOM 4th Year Executive Officer Justin Miguel Caparros said that although the automation of elections was more efficient in tallying the votes, it was also a factor in some candidates not reaching their quota.

“Some key areas in voting did not have its usual station, especially in CTC-SOM. This key station was replaced by one in Colayco Pav, which is directly adjacent to the Faura station—where as I observed, [there is] minimal foot traffic. This logistical problem of not putting a CTC-SOM Station could prove to be reason enough for not reaching quota of some candidates,” he said.

Chief Comelec Commissioner Jessica Gail Lazaro however, was pleased with the overall outcome of the very first automated Sanggu elections. “As early as the first day, some positions already reached the quota, and we have fortunately not received any major complaints with regard to the reliability of the automated system”, she said in mixed English and Filipino.

Elections were also held for block and course representatives. The winning representatives are as follows:

  • Hi GUIDON!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the “S” in “ASL” stands for “Servant.” As in “Ateneo Servant Leaders.” 😛

    Thank you! 😀
