Ægis 1930
Birth of the shield
THE ATENEO yearbook was first published as Aegis in 1930; it featured a sketch of Athena holding the Ateneo seal as a shield (see P3). The yearbook’s new name underlined the growing importance of military training to the school. By 1939, each cadet would have a yearbook picture in full military gala.
Ægis 1959
The Ateneo Centennial
THE FIRST volume of Aegis ‘59, the Ateneo Centennial yearbook, is a 69-page retracing of the Ateneo’s first hundred years. The yearbook staff wanted graduates to remember the school through a “sum of each year’s greatest events” right from the very start of the Ateneo.
Ægis 1973
Flight of the lady eagle
BY 1973, Ateneo would admit women into the college level. Aegis ’73 portrayed such an environment as the ideal Ateneo. The women in the yearbook pictures were wearing short skirts, and a photo of a lady’s pair of legs even got published as a whole page.
Ægis 1980s
A nation liberated
THE AEGISES of the ‘80s chronicled specific major events, like Ninoy’s death and People Power. Aegis chronicled this period of great political activism among Ateneans through memorable photos that captured the dramatic scenes of this time.
Ægis 2009
AEGIS ‘09 celebrated a century and a half of the Ateneo Way. The yearbook’s focus on the sesquicentennial festivities and its three themes served not only as a reminder of the Ateneo’s storied past, but also as a vision of the years to come.
