Atenean Voice: What do students really think about the Ateneo Environmental Management Coalition?

“I think [the AEMC is] doing a great job even though there seems to be only a few environmentalists here. At least they’re trying to make the issues more visible, for the community not to keep ignoring anymore.”

Kriz Irvin Marx P. Ocampo (IV BS CTM)

“It’s clear that the administration has been exerting efforts to improve the environment. You can see it everywhere – [in the TVs in the cafeteria, in the additional trash cans and the BYOB scheme]. The new Rizal Library is also a step in the right direction…For the e-trikes, however, although the intention is good, it’s not really utilized well. Nevertheless, all in all, the environmental efforts are very good.”

Jonathan Bryan F. Salcedo (III BS ME)

“Unfortunately, I believe the problem lies not within the Ateneo’s efforts, but in the apathy of its students.”

Jian Aldric T. Kho (I  BS Psy)

“I think it is timely that the Ateneo has taken a greener role when it comes to waste management. I acknowledge the effort to make real our intention to save the environment. However, I do not agree with the incentives (or rather, punishments) that the policies and programs have set upon us. I find it unfair to sanction our “non-environmental” behavior with monetary sanctions and the uneasy transition and behavioral change towards a greener lifestyle.”

Ray Anthony D. Roderos (III AB DS)

“It’s a great effort; it’s just sad that not everyone cares to contribute as much as the Ateneo does for the environment.”

Fidea Marie L. Encarnacion (I BS LM)

“The initiatives are great, but the fact that only a few of us actually participate in these initiatives—it just defeats the purpose of it all.”

Adrian Nicholas A. Corpuz (I AB PH)

“[The deposit scheme] greatly reduces the waste coming from the University. Even if it is a hassle we need measures like these in place so that people will be forced to comply. The students are more orderly with the revised implementation of the BYOB.”

Antonio Manuel O. Mozo (III BS MIS)

“I think it’s good. It shows that we can be responsible for our environment and that our own little efforts, collectively, can have a bigger effect. It’s actually inspiring that we’re able to decrease waste disposals and that our school is trying to be more environmentally friendly.”

Janna Mae L. Estares (II AB COM)

“Ateneo’s environmental efforts such as the plastics campaign in the cafeteria are great and very admirable but they still need to do more. Maybe they can invest in clean, renewable energy and continue their alternative transportation programs such as the e-tricycle.”

Francisco Santos D. Barros (II BS Mgt)
