BLUE JUDOKA Paulo Luz (III BS HSc) and Lady Tanker Nicole Santiago (IV AB MEco) won The GUIDON Moro-Lorenzo Awards while Blue Tanker Jonas Ramos (IV AB MEco) took home the Ambrosio Padilla Award at the Loyola Schools Awards for Leadership and Service.
The LS Awards were last March 10 in the Manuel V. Pangilinan Center for Student Leadership (MVP-CSL) Roofdeck.
Special citations were also bestowed on Blue Eagle Chris Tiu (V BSM AMF) and Lady Jin Olympian Toni Rivero (I AB IS) during the event. Tiu was recognized by the Padilla family for maintaining high academic standards while Rivero was cited by the University Athletics Office, the College Athletics Office, and The GUIDON for participating in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.
Key roles
Luz won the Moro-Lorenzo Sportsman of the Year after being named as the Most Valuable Player in Season 71 of the UAAP Judo Tournament.
Santiago, on the other hand, won the Moro-Lorenzo Sportswoman of the Year after she won three golds, three silvers, and breaking two University Athletic Association of the Philippines records in the Season 71 Swimming Tournament.
More importantly, both athletes played key roles in bringing their teams to their respective first place finishes.
This is Santiago’s third consecutive year to be nominated as a finalist, but is her first year to actually win.
Glory to the Ateneo
The GUIDON-Moro Lorenzo Award is given annually to a male student athlete and female student athlete who have shown utmost dedication, excellence, and passion in their respective sports–and in doing so, have given glory to the Ateneo.
Winners are judged on the criteria of both the team and individual performance, which are broken down into their ranks, statistics, and awards attained for the current school year.
Values such as leadership, service, and impact towards the team and the community are also given significant weight in deciding who best represent the award.
Sports and academics
Ramos won the Ambrosio Padilla Award as he became a finalist in various events with the Blue Tankers in all four years with the team. This year, he was able to bring the team to fourth place in the UAAP while breaking a record in the 4 x 50 medley relay.
The Ambrosio Padilla Award gives due recognition to student-athletes that have shown a high performance level both in sports and academics throughout their college stay.
The other nominees for the Ambrosio Padilla Award were Carlo Berba (III AB Psy) and Itunu Kuku (III AB DS).
Other finalists
Other finalists for Moro Lorenzo’s Sportsman of the Year Award included Blue Eagle Rabeh Al-Hussaini (IV AB IS) and Blue Jin Mark Dizon (II AB MEco).
Runners-up in the Sportswoman of the Year Award were Rozelle Sarmiento (IV AB MEco), Gem Ong (III AB MEco), Maita Mendoza (III BS CTM), and Mica Sibayan (III AB Comm).
Last year’s winners of The GUIDON Moro-Lorenzo Award were Tiu, Pat Ozaeta (BS ME ’07), and Cassandra Tioseco (AB IS ’07).
Riva Galveztan (BS CTM ’08) was the previous winner of the Ambrosio Padilla Award.
