Five departed Ateneans remembered
THE ATENEO set aside a day to pray for the community’s members who passed away during the past year, through a day of remembrance held November 18. Friends and family of Joey Carlos (AB Eco-H), Lorenz Tan (BS ME ‘06), Angelo Brillantes (IV BS CTM), Gabriel Martin Doller (III AB Eu), and Ruth Ferrer (AB Philo ‘08) were present during the day’s activities, which included candle-lighting, praying of the rosary, and a Eucharistic Mass.
A mini-shrine was set up at the Zen Garden for friends and family to light candles and pray for the souls of the five departed. The Campus Ministry Office organized the event.

UNESCO celebrates World Philosophy Day
THE RESPONSIBILITY of the “other” was elaborated in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) celebration of World Philosophy Day and the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, held November 20 at the Social Development Complex Auditorium.
Speakers from various institutions such as San Beda College and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, together with Ateneo professors, flocked together to confer about the relationship between philosophy, power, and human rights. A forum followed after each panel discussion.

Kaakibat business plan writing competition opened
THE ATENEO School of Government, with the Council of Organizations of Ateneo and the Ateneo Management Association, in cooperation with the People Helping People Foundation Inc. (PHPFI) will be hosting the “Kaakibat Social Entrepreneurship Business Plan Writing Competition.”
The competition is open to students of the Ateneo from November 2008 to February 2009. Its main objective is to raise funds for the PHPFI’s livelihood projects, and develop innovative solutions for its adopted families. Participating teams will specifically plan and work with the community of San Luis, Batangas.

‘Amazing China’ trivia contest conducted for first time
FROM POP culture to history to economics, contestants were quizzed on various tidbits about China in the first “Amazing China” trivia competition on November 26 at the Ching Tan Room.
Paul Jason Co (IV BS Ps MSE), Dianna Carla Yap (III AB Eco), Jennica Grace Tañeca (II AB MEco), Tiffany Lim (II BS Mgt), and Michelle Christine Yap (V BS Ch-ACS) emerged as finalists after two rounds of answering questions on China’s culture.
Co emerged in the first place, while Tañeca and Lim shared second place. The two Yaps tied at third place. All finalists were awarded cash prizes.
The Chinese Studies Program and the Confucius Institute organized the contest.
