THE ATENEO Rowing Team continued their rise to prominence among their Southeast Asian counterparts as they rowed their way to Top 2 performances in both the rowing division and overall in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Varsity Boat Race 2008. This is the latest in a growing line of international victories that include a win last August in the same venue.

Braving the tides of Malaysia, the select crop of Blue Scullers faced off several elite teams including Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, eventual overall champions of the ASEAN league, and Burapha University of Thailand to name a few.

The competition, which transpired in the course of five days, from October 16 to 20, found itself within the confines of Putrajaya Water Sports Complex that highlighted both rowing and canoeing tournaments.

Stand out

The team that represented the Blue and White managed to stand out among the pool of varsities as they ranked finalist in all four rowing events and brought home silver medals in three of the four rowing sub-divisions.

From the Women’s Coxless Fours class, Team Ateneo’s silver medal finish was led by Liane Denise B. Tan (III BS Bio), Ingrid G. Taojo (IV BS LM), Cordella G. Pelaez (III BS Bio) and bowman Nicoleen Y. Gasparillo (III BS Bio).

Not to be fazed by Malaysia’s very own rowing cluster, the Scullers stormed the gates in the following Men’s Single Sculls and Men’s Coxless Fours classes as both teams garnered 2nd place distinctions respectively.

Paolo Luis Encarnacion (IV AB Hum) represented the school in the Men’s Single Sculls while Antonio Rodrigo Salud (II AB Eco-H), Jeffrey Sajot (IV BS LM), Team Captain Martin Yambao (III AB Eu), and Timothy Fonacier (IV BS CTM) comprised the Men’s Coxless Fours team.

Among the best

For newcomers Camille Arevalo (III AB MEco) and Bernadette Velasco (III AB MEco), their tournament debuts in international waters can be considered nothing short of a success as they called on their rigorous two-month training to finish as finalists in the Women’s Double Sculls. In spite of being edged out of a medal finish, the duo gained significant exposure in the rowing excursions.
