Lady Shuttlers hit the ground running in Season 81 opener

THE ATENEO Lady Shuttlers defeated the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors in a dominant 5-0 team-tie victory on the opening day of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 81 Women’s Badminton tournament on Monday, September 24 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Chanelle Lunod started off the afternoon strong with a convincing win, dominating in two sets with scores of 21-7 and 21-6 against UE’s Jalyne Chua in the first singles event.

Keeping the momentum going, Geva De Vera dictated play in the second match to defeat Kessara Palot, 21-10, 21-5, in the second singles match. The Lady Shuttlers’ matchday fate was sealed with a decisive victory from the tandem of Aly Roxas and Bea Felizardo, as they demonstrated undeniable chemistry to propel them to a two-set victory, scoring 21-7 and 21-5.

Chanelle Lunod and Geva De Vera both stepped up once more for the Blue and White in the second doubles match against the pair of Erycka Labay and Laville Laborte. The Ateneo duo outplayed their counterparts in two sets, 21-7, 21-12. Ateneo’s successful afternoon sweep was capped off by their team captain, Samantha Ramos, who closed the final match against Laville Laborte in straight sets, 21-11, 21-15.

This win puts the Lady Shuttlers at 1-0 in the standings. Their next team-tie will be against the DLSU Lady Archers at 1pm on September 27 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, Manila.

2nd Singles: Geva De Vera def. Kessara Palot, 21-10, 21-5.  

3rd Singles: Samantha Ramos def. Laville Laborte, 21-11, 21-15.

1st Doubles: Aly Roxas and Bea Felizardo def. Jalyne Chua and Dennine Nicole Leonardo, 21-7, 21-5.

2nd Doubles: Chanelle Lunod and Geva De Vera def. Erica Labay and Laville Laborte, 21-7, 21-12.
