Women's Chess

Eager to Fly Higher

by Mac Reyes

CLOSING THE previous season with amazing momentum, the Ateneo Women’s Chess Team (AWCT) is ramping up preparations for Season 87 with greater discipline and determination to maintain their stronghold. The Blue Eagles gracefully struck success in the past two seasons as their runs in Seasons 85 and 86 both ended with stellar bronze finishes. Last year, key player Jiessel Marino greatly contributed to the team with a phenomenal gold finish. Taking the helm once again, ever-driven Team Captain Kristine Flores is confident that rookies Alphecca Gonzales, Lexie Hernandez, Aleck Saniego, and Elayza Villa will skillfully display their potential. Meanwhile, veterans Marino and Glesit Tatoy are committed to giving their all and sustaining their accomplishments from the previous seasons. Being composed of high upside rookies and astounding veterans, the AWCT is preparing to be stronger than ever, aiming to secure more podium finishes—and potentially, the UAAP crown.
